Jon Rattenbury

Jon Rattenbury is known for his meticulous attention to detail and his exceptional mastery of light and color, which allow him to capture all the spectacular beauty of nature. His deep passion for the natural world shines through in each of his dreamlike works.

Born in Cheltenham, England, Jon Rattenbury comes from a family of artists. His mother and grandmother were both talented musicians, nurturing his creative spirit from a very young age. When he was three, his family emigrated to the United States and settled in Northern California.

Rattenbury spent his youth exploring California's varied landscapes, drawing inspiration from the majestic mountains of the Sierra Nevada and the spectacular California coastline. Self-taught, he began drawing at a very young age before turning to oil and acrylic painting at the age of thirteen. His natural talent and passion for art thus showed themselves very early on.

After finishing high school, Rattenbury honed his artistic skills by holding various positions in the creative industries. In particular, he worked with stained and etched glass, did photo retouching and also gained experience in the printing industry.

In the 1990s, Rattenbury began exhibiting his work in galleries in Southern California, marking the start of his career as a full-time artist. It was also during this period that his art really took off on the Japanese market. Since then, he has enjoyed lasting success that continues to this day.

Rattenbury is especially renowned for his innovative technique of dimensional acrylic on aluminum. This unique process combines a wide variety of materials, including aluminum, modeling paste, polymer clay, resin, glass, stone, sand and metallic acrylic paints, to create striking works rich in relief and texture.

By cutting out and raising certain elements, such as trees and leaves, above the background, Rattenbury brings depth and contrast to his compositions. He further enriches the textures of his works by incorporating different types of stone, sand and glass, which are then coated with resin for a polished finish.

Alongside his dimensional acrylic creations, Rattenbury also produces beautiful paintings on canvas depicting landscapes and wildlife with great richness of detail and vivid colors.

Rattenbury's works have been shown in exhibitions and galleries around the world, attracting a growing number of collectors. He has worked with Park West Gallery and taken part in numerous VIP events, both on land and aboard cruise ships. His work has also met with considerable success in Japan, where he has exhibited in several major cities and where he continues to travel every year for new exhibitions.

Beyond his artistic career, Rattenbury is also a passionate musician. He has released two New Age music albums, “Eternal Spirit” and “Ascension”.

Rattenbury's artwork has also been licensed for a wide range of products, including puzzles, cross-stitch patterns, 3D prints, mosaics, flags, screensavers, notebooks, magnets, calendars and cards.
